Polo's note
Taiwan marked its one hundred and fifteenth Double Ten National Day with festive fireworks, military flypasts, and a sharp domestic political confrontation that overshadowed the official celebrations. While President Lai Ching-te used his address to frame Taiwan as an ark carrying diverse ethnic cultures, emphasize cross-strait peace, and highlight economic resilience, Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu delivered an unscripted critique accusing the administration of fake democracy and true dictatorship.
Coverage across local and regional broadcasters captured contrasting focal points. Outlets such as FTV News and PTS News detailed President Lai's literary framing and his administration's focus on national defense and domestic livelihoods. Meanwhile, TVBS News and SET News highlighted the sharp partisan friction, including Han Kuo-yu's off-the-cuff remarks, local officials declaring regional persistences, and controversies such as a promotional graphic mistakenly utilizing a Chinese fighter jet image.
Commentary from Japanese viewers focused on unrelated domestic political scandals concerning ministerial resignations and budget accountability, reflecting how external audiences often project local anxieties onto major international broadcasts. Yet within the domestic sphere, the celebration served primarily as a proxy battlefield for institutional rivalries.
As the reports illustrate, the immediate political fallout centres on legislative pushback and executive responses to Han Kuo-yu's accusations, setting the stage for deeper partisan gridlock. Observers will be watching how the executive branch navigates these legislative standoffs as cross-strait pressures continue to mount.
